"WARNING: Firefighter's Wife; Keep Back 500 feet"
As we were driving home from my Mother-in-Law's in Philo at 5:00 pm we came upon an overturned vehicle. At first glance one would have thought there was no one inside, but further investigation found evidence of human life. My husband quickly pulled over our Dodge Ram said "drive until you find cell reception and call Cal-Fire" (not noticing the call box on the side of the road). After noticing someone on the call box telephone I quickly jumped out of the truck as well. I headed across the highway to where the man was talking on the telephone to a Communications Operator (one of my husband's colleagues).
I then received a flair from a neighboring vehicle and headed back to my truck. As I sat with my two small children in the vehicle I observed my husband climb inside the overturned vehicle. Moments later he pulled the women out. He then proceeded to hold C-Spine until help arrived.
What I learned from this whole experience:
1. We can make plans for ourselves, but God is ultimately in control of our day.
Proverbs 15:11; God knows all things, even those things that are hidden from the eyes of all living; He knows particularly the hearts of the children of men
2. Hubby is one heck of an EMT. Not only was he off duty, but he had his family waiting for him for 45 minutes. That shows great respect for the badge and the call of duty.
If you hadn't already heard my husband is a Firefighter/EMT working for Cal Fire at Howard Forest in the Emergency Command Center. He also is a volunteer firefighter with Ukiah City Fire Department in Ukiah CA. In the 2.5 years that I have known him we have never had to stop for a car accident, until last night. Of course I was already late for a Pampered Chef party being hosted for my mom, and the Call of Duty made me increasingly tardier. That aside my husband was someone's hero last night.
"I'LL SHOW YOU A VOLUNTEER"
Show me a person who spends endless hours
in training without pay,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person where a cry for help brings
split-second dispatch,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who is devastated when
lives are lost or maimed,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who is graciously welcomed
as a next-door neighbor,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who takes ridicule more than
compliments,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person whose car is garaged with
the grille facing out,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who sacrifices home life,
TV... even tender moments,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person visibly moved at the strains
of our National Anthem,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who may be asked to give
more than just dedication,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who is asked to give more...
and more... and more,
And, I'll show you a volunteer.
3. Children are resilient. Both of our small children were patient and kind. After explaining the situation, Mr. A Said, "Daddy is a Firefighter, I hope that a firefighter would help us if we were in danger."
'My Daddy the Fireman"
My Dad has a job, and a hard one at that;
He is a fireman and wears a fire hat.
His uniform is starched and pressed all in place;
He serves and he helps anyone in this space.
He loves to help people just like he does at home;
He cares for our family and never lets me roam.
When I hear sirens outside in the yard,
I say a quick prayer that the angels are on guard.
I do not always say and I hope my daddy knows,
The heart felt pride and love for him I do not always show.
Sometimes when he has to go I feel so very sad;
I hope he knows I love him because he’s
My fireman Dad!
God Bless,
what a great heroic deed and a great story! Yaaaay for your hubby!! thats awesome!~
